Black and White, or Color? HDR in Downtown Orlando…
Black and white photography has a timeless appeal that can create an emotional response that’s different from color. Light, shadow, pattern, texture, and tonality work beautifully together to create an expressive image independent from the connotations color. Black and white can romanticize an image, look at the wonderful work of wedding photographers! Much of the appeal for me started with film photography, and making my own prints, messy but a lot of fun! This was taken in downtown Orlando at twilight as a three shot HDR merged in HDR Efex Pro. The image was converted to black and white with Nik Silver Efex Pro which can create an elegant traditional film look. Try it and see! You can use my coupon code for a discount for everything Nik! Instantly, I chose color or HDR in color. I love night shots with the colors of the buildings and headlights/taillights in them. That is, until I came here and saw the black and white version of the picture. Now I am really torn between the two. Pretty sure I like the color version better, but really like that you’ve opened my eyes to the black and white version as well. Thanks!
Hi Michael – I thought the same thing, I like both for different reasons! It’s good to have choices. Some photos seem to be stronger in black and white and then… there’s the impact of a color image. I appreciate your thoughts! ~ Deb
I almost always pick colour when given the choice. But in this case the black and white really speaks to me. I think it is the contrast that attracts me to it.
The color version is beautiful. The B&W version is a dramatic knockout. Each has its own qualities and merits, so it just boils down to which photo moves one the most.
“May I have the envelope please?” (rip, rip)”And the winner is… oh, yes, its the black and white!”
Well, for me, the drama wins over the beauty of color. That being said, I’m sure, the next four people will choose the color version and be just as correct as I am.

I’m a sucker for a strong black and white and still regret not keeping all my darkroom gear. If I was forced to pick then the Black & White would win on an artistic level..
Very nice Deb! I have to say I am partial to the B&W, but 99% of what I shoot ends up in B&W any way, so I guess I am biased. *laugh*
I find that color can hide texture and detail that can only be brought out in B&W and that is what appeals to me. Keep showing off your great work!
Hi Anne – That’s good to know, thank you! Sometimes B&W speaks more clearly, and it’s super helpful to have your expertise opinion! Thank you!
Hi Ron, LOL, thank you for your great post and thoughts about B&W, very much appreciated! I can visualize the envelope! 🙂
Hi Ray, I still have some of my B&W darkroom gear too! Hard to part with, but that clunky enlarger… Thank you, I appreciate knowing why you like it! That means a lot!
Hi Gary, I agree, without color, other qualities are enhanced, great thoughts here. Thank you very much!
