Using Fill Flash for Travel Photography

I couldn’t resist buying several scarfs from this beautiful young girl in Peru! She has the sweetest smile, and she is very good at marketing! Everywhere in Peru there is color, such a vibrant place. This image was optimized in camera raw, and tweaked in Photoshop using Nik Viveza and Nik Color Efex Pro.  For people shots while traveling, I use flash with a Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsable Inverted Dome Diffuser which diffuses the light and keeps a natural look to the image. The Lightsphere is perfect for travel, and collapses flat fitting in my backpack when not in use. Have fun shooting! ~ Deb

A great reminder… I am lousy at remembering to use fill flash…

Hi John, thank you! A reminder to myself too, rarely using flash, but really helps when I do!

Hey Deb…is the diffuser you mention the same one in the photo of you with the Peruvian girls looking at your camera on your “About” page?

Hi Gary, that’s the one. It inverts and folds down (basically one piece of plastic). It’s the collapsable version. Hope that helps!

I recently purchased the collapsable Lightsphere beause I could never force myself to carry my old one, as it took up too much space. Then I’d kick myself for not having it when I thought it would be useful. Now it is in the bag all the time and I’m using it more.

    Love your image Deb! Thanks.

Hi Mark, that’s great to hear! Good to know others find the collapsable Lightsphere handy too! I’m getting a new Loka photo bag next month and it will have a dedicated compartment! 🙂 Thank you!
