Controlling light, creating artistic imagery with the use of neutral density filters…

Remnants of an old dock in Naples, Florida.

The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.
~ Jacques Yves Cousteau

Naples, Florida is one of my favorite places to photograph. The remnants of this old fishing pier are popular with fishermen and tourists too, making it tricky sometimes to grab a shot. I like what happens with the patterns formed around the posts created by the crashing waves and relatively short “long” exposure. This was photographed after sunset using a Nikon D810, Nikkor 16mm – 35mm wide angle lens, Vu Filters 100 x 150mm Sion Q 2-Stop Hard-Edge Graduated Neutral Density Filter, polarizer, and Induro CGT214. I’m trying out a few new filters at the beach as the clouds are getting better and better this spring. A polarizer in this case, holds back light slightly which helps with extending exposure time, and the graduated neutral density filter balances light in the composition, correcting for the brightness of the sky. I’m looking forward to returning to Naples soon, as I like to revisit familiar locations in different weather conditions. Hopefully with beautiful clouds again! Happy Shooting…

Beautiful shot. I especially love the way the foam surrounds the pilings. Where exactly is this in Naples? I live on the East Coast of Florida, and would like to drive over there one late afternoon to make some shots. Thanks.

This is just north of the Naples fishing pier, avoid it during the weekends if possible as it’s a popular spot! Summer would be beautiful if you have the chance, but do photograph both piers. Enjoy!
