Père Lachaise Cemetery
One of the first questions I was asked when I arrived at the Père Lachaise Cemetery… “Are you looking for Jim Morrison?” And I was promptly informed that he was dead, which is fairly well known but I fell into the joke. Morrison’s grave is ever popular, and well revered, judging by the number of people paying there respects. Chopin is buried there, along with Oscar Wilde and many others. The Père Lachaise Cemetery is beautiful and quiet, and a wonderful place to visit if you are ever in Paris.
Photographing cemeteries seems to fit perfectly with infrared photography. Infrared has a surreal and ethereal look that fits in with cemeteries, creating fascinating imagery that is unique and beautiful. Spring is the perfect time for infrared photography. Digital Silver Imaging is having a spring sale on infrared conversion, which only lasts through the month of May. You can save even more using code sandidge13 which provides free shipping. I visited here 10 years ago and really enjoyed it, if that’s a word that you’re allowed to use when it comes to a cemetery. Morrison’s grave was indeed the popular one, but for me the star attraction was the grave of Édith Piaf. Now that I take photos, however, I just know that I would obsess over sitting beside her grave waiting for a little sparrow to perch upon it – and thus create the perfect image.
Sweet! I will have to go again. So much to see there. I didn’t get to the Montmartre cemetery this year, it’s beautiful there too. Everyone is telling me London has some nice ones, next trip! Thanks Michael!
